Movie Review: That Sugar Film

That Sugar Film is a sharp, engaging dive into the hidden dangers of sugar in our diets. Directed by Damon Gameau, it follows his 60-day experiment eating "healthy" foods packed with hidden sugars, revealing alarming health consequences.

The film excels in simplifying complex science through humor, animations, and relatable analogies, making it both educational and entertaining. Gameau’s personal journey—marked by weight gain, mood swings, and declining health—hits harder than any statistic, encouraging viewers to rethink their own diets.

While some moments feel exaggerated, the film’s vibrant style and accessible message leave a lasting impact. Ity’s well worth the watch.

Rating: 4.5/5: A fun, eye-opening watch that challenges how we view sugar and “healthy” eating.

“What we are teaches the child far more than what we say, so we must be what we want our children to become.”

Three Tips: Avoiding Processed Sugar

# 1 READ FOOD LABELS.

Look for hidden sources of sugar, which may be listed under various names like sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, and more. Also, be cautious of terms like "evaporated cane juice," which is essentially another name for sugar. The closer a sugar source is to the beginning of the ingredient list, the higher the sugar content in the product.

# 2 COOK AT HOME.

This gives you more control over the ingredients you use. Use natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or mashed bananas instead of processed sugar. You can also experiment with using spices like cinnamon or vanilla extract to enhance the flavor of your dishes without adding sugar.

# 3 CHOOSE UNPROCESSED.

Opt for whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. These foods contain natural sugars and fiber, which can help satisfy your sweet cravings without the need for added sugars. When selecting packaged foods, go for options with minimal or no added sugars. For example, unsweetened yogurt, and be mindful of the sugar content in condiments and sauces.
